Frame, Struts, Brakes - 4x4 Off-Road UTV Build Ep.23

Welding the tube frame, fabricating custom shocks, disassembling and assembling the independent front and rear suspension and getting this UTV finally off the wooden jig and rolling!
This is part of a series of a four wheel drive utility vehicle build to lessen the work load on my trusty 2002 Honda Foreman Rubicon TRX500FA. This partially answers the question "Why?" but for those who want to ask "why don't you just buy a side-by-side instead of building one?" I just want to say - I'm not made of money. Side-by-sides are ridiculously expensive, even the car I drive around daily is worth less (not worthless though!), hell, it is even worth less than my 2002 Honda ATV.
"How much HP will it have?" - the 1.4 litre FWD petrol engine I'm planning on using has 55 kw and this will not change, but the torque will be tripled via the BMW differentials I'm using to transfer power to front and rear axles.
"It will be too heavy!" - this project just like the firewood processor project does not have to float. And a heavier vehicle will handle better anyway when hauling heavy loads.
Stay tuned for future episodes! Thanks for watching!

  • The first mistake is to fix the brake fluid tank with plastic straps ... the plastic degrades over time and the brake fluid is vital - after it leaks, the braking will be done in Flinstone style. There is nothing wrong with the steering wheel - please check the chassis geometry. The static center of gravity is problematic, how did you solve it dynamically (lateral motor, lateral rotation masses)? Is there a balancing shaft somewhere?

  • When you weld those plate brackets to reinforce square profile joints, weld it to the edge of the profile. Then you have continous material. Now when you welded bracket in to the middle of the profile, there is no material behind it.

  • Idee sulle. Lahtised diffrid on kallakutel suureks nuhtluseks, kõrgemal olev ratas ei taha muud teha kui tühja kaapida. Saaksid mõlemate veovõllide flantside vahele panna ketirattad ja neid lukustava võlli. Arvan et saad ideest aru, lihtne lülitatav lukusti.

    • Yup, that's the idea behind this one seater UTV - being compact and maneuverable. I'd like it to be close to the maneuvering capabilities of the Honda Foreman ATV I have. It's especially important in the bush when doing firewood.
